ETS has recently focused on putting learners and educators at the center, leading to a series of significant changes to the GRE General Test. Starting from September 22, 2023, the test duration will be reduced by half, and the score reporting time will also be shortened. These changes aim to provide a better testing experience, save test-takers’ time, and help them complete their applications more quickly.

官方公告:

As the result of a renewed and focused effort at ETS to ensure that learners and educators are at the center of all we do, we are making some big changes to the GRE General Test and want you to be the first to know. The GRE test will continue to measure the same skills and maintain the strong quality and security you expect, with valid and reliable scores for confident decision making.
Importantly, the score scales will remain the same so you can easily compare performance across cohorts before and after September 2023.

Beginning September 22, 2023, testing time will be reduced by half, from nearly four hours to just under two, and the official score turnaround time will reduce from 10-15 days to 8-10 days.

Combined, these changes are intended to provide test takers with a better experience that values their time and reduces anxiety and fatigue, ultimately helping them to complete and submit their applications more quickly.

About the shorter GRE:
  • The shorter GRE will have the same three measures, question types and score scales, but fewer questions in the Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning sections.
  • The Analytical Writing section will remain because we know that in this ChatGPT world, it’s more important than ever to have an authentic applicant writing sample. However, we are reducing the number of essay tasks from two to one. Test takers’ actual essays will continue to be available in ETS Data Manager, so you can compare their GRE essay responses with other writing samples you may receive as part of their applications.
  • Because the sections and question types will remain the same (except that we are dropping the “Analyze an Argument” writing task), students can use currently available materials to prepare. Updated prep will be available this fall.
  • The shorter GRE will replace the current version on September 22, 2023. There will not be an overlap timeframe during which both tests are available.
  • Registration for the shorter GRE is open now, and appointments can be secured by choosing a test date on or after September 22, 2023.
These particular changes have been prioritized based on test taker feedback and are the result of analysis by and discussions with our assessment development and psychometrics teams about how we could introduce a better experience for test takers while retaining the strong validity and reliability schools need for confident decision-making. The GRE team is thrilled to introduce these changes, and later this year, we plan to announce more improvements to the test taker experience, such as the streamlined registration process our TOEFL team is rolling out this summer.

In the coming weeks, we will be publishing web pages for schools and students with details about the changes, as well as FAQs. We will also hold online events with our subject matter experts, through which you can directly ask and receive answers to your questions.
