The University of Iowa is a major national research university located on a 1,900-acre campus in Iowa City in southeast Iowa. Teaching and research assistantships are a great source of extra income for graduate students, and they are available in most University departments. Stipends for 2011-12 are $16,908 for a half-time academic-year appointment and $20,664 for a half-time fiscal-year appointment. In addition, doctoral students may receive a minimum annual stipend of $24,000 plus tuition for as many as four years. During the final year, recipients receive $25,500 annually plus full tuition.
