Applying for a U.S. Student Visa in Taiwan

Student Visa Basics

  1. The F-1 student visa is a nonimmigrant visa
  2. Applicant must have significant ties outside of the U.S. and intend to return to Taiwan
  3. Must be a bona fide student whose sole purpose is to study
  4. Ability to finance education

Full Course of Study Requirement

  1. Undergraduates: 12 credit hours per semester
  2. Graudate students
    • 8 credit hours per semester
    • With assistantship: 6 credit hours per semester
  3. Exceptions: medical emergency, thesis, final semester…talk to your adviser

Visa Application

  1. Fill out an application online and make appointment at www.visaagent.com.tw
  2. Wait time for appointments: usually under 2 weeks
  3. Interview in person
  4. Passport returned by courier service: 2-3 days

Application and Related Fees

  1. For current visa application fee please visit:  http://www.ait.org.tw/zh/nonimmigrant-visas-fees.html
    • Payable at post office
    • Provide receipt at interview
  2. SEVIS I-901 fee: US$200
    • www.fmjfee.com or Western Union Quick Pay
    • Provide evidence of payment at interview

Application Documents

  1. DS-160 application form (From June 1, 2010)
  2. I-20 issued by the school
  3. Evidence of payment (Application and SEVIS)
  4. Current and old passports; current photo
  5. Transcripts from US and Taiwan schools
  6. Evidence of financial ability

Dependents

  1. Spouses and children (not parents) are eligible to apply for an F-2 visa
  2. May not work or study (except for attending K-12)
  3. Each F-2 applicant must have a separate I-20
  4. Must depart the US when F-1 student’s status ends

Tips for the Interview

  1. Have a clear plan of study and articulate it
  2. Organize your supporting documentation
  3. Be honest
  4. Be prepared to speak in English if I-20 indicates that you are proficient
