Applying for a U.S. Student Visa in Taiwan
Student Visa Basics
The F-1 student visa is a nonimmigrant visa
Applicant must have significant ties outside of the U.S. and intend to return to Taiwan
Must be a bona fide student whose sole purpose is to study
Ability to finance education
Full Course of Study Requirement
Undergraduates: 12 credit hours per semester
Graudate students
8 credit hours per semester
With assistantship: 6 credit hours per semester
Exceptions: medical emergency, thesis, final semester…talk to your adviser
Visa Application
Fill out an application online and make appointment at
www.visaagent.com.tw
Wait time for appointments: usually under 2 weeks
Interview in person
Passport returned by courier service: 2-3 days

Payable at post office
Provide receipt at interview
SEVIS I-901 fee: US$200

DS-160 application form (From June 1, 2010)
I-20 issued by the school
Evidence of payment (Application and SEVIS)
Current and old passports; current photo
Transcripts from US and Taiwan schools
Evidence of financial ability
Dependents
Spouses and children (not parents) are eligible to apply for an F-2 visa
May not work or study (except for attending K-12)
Each F-2 applicant must have a separate I-20
Must depart the US when F-1 student’s status ends
Tips for the Interview
Have a clear plan of study and articulate it
Organize your supporting documentation
Be honest
Be prepared to speak in English if I-20 indicates that you are proficient
